Many years ago, when I started this little group of women to meet monthly and support each other in business, I coined a WESOS term (not knowing that at the time). I talked about WESOS members who “get it” and those members who did not “get it”.
As the history of WESOS unfolded, I often questioned, as did other WESOS Sisters, what exactly was the “it” and what is evidence that someone “gets it” or doesn’t “get it”?
Now, I have answered that question for myself, and others.
I discovered, “it” is the idea, notion, or belief that the only way women can truly be successful and feel fulfilled is through meaningful, connected and collaborative relationships with like-minded businesswomen.
When WESOS began in 2012, gathering women together was effortless. After all every entrepreneur wants to find a way to promote their business or brand. I just intuitively knew I wanted a different kind of networking group a group whose “intention” was based first on authentic, supportive relationships and not just passing business cards and making business transactions. The WESOS Intention was born through the goals and ideas for growing a community of women supporting women in business.
For WESOS, the individuals that “get it” understand 100% our WESOS Intention, which is:
“We are a thriving group of women entrepreneurs committed to cultivating authentic relationships while providing ongoing mutual support and resources for growing our businesses.”
The WESOS Intention is fundamental. It is the most crucial element of the WESOS community. The WESOS Intention has a copyright because it is so ingrained in the culture of our communities and is the inspiration for each new WESOS chapter launch. At the beginning of each and every WESOS Meeting, the WESOS leader takes a few meditative moments to quiet the room and invite the attendees to get calm and centered. While in this state of quiet reflection, the leader then shares the WESOS Intention with the group. The Intention conveys to every woman in the room why WESOS exists and immediately lets every woman know the “it” for WESOS so they can decide whether or not they belong and if they “get it”.
Trust me, the Intention is not for everyone, and that is OK! The world is full of ideas, and not everyone aligns with those ideas. There are always objectives that not everyone “gets”. This is a beautiful, diverse part of life and makes the world an exciting place to be!
The WESOS Intention sets us apart from traditional networking groups because we don’t start with business building, we start with relationship building. Once the relationship is established, the business within WESOS begins to thrive through honest, knowledgeable referrals.
Let’s face it, most of us don’t do business with people we don’t like or trust unless we have to!
We have many meeting attendees that don’t resonate with the Intention and its purpose to create an atmosphere that is “safe” and welcoming to all that attend. That’s fine, these women simply do not come back to a meeting. I like to say very honestly, “They just don’t get it” because – well, they just don’t understand the purpose of the Intention. But, for those that stay, WESOS becomes a place where being unkind, backstabbing or competitiveness is shunned, thereby giving each member permission to hold their fellow “WESOS Sisters” accountable to the WESOS Way. It is a place to feel safe and supported by not only her WESOS Chapter Sisters but from the entire WESOS community across the United States (and growing!)
I believe the WESOS Intention is what really makes a huge difference in our WESOS Sister’s Community. The Intention not only sets a goal for every WESOS Sister at every WESOS Chapter meeting and even into our WESOS Groups online on Facebook and Meetup.com. The goal is not only established but also gives a guideline on “how” the goal will be reached. This “attitude”, if you will, is a big part of the Intention. Our community is committed to one and other, not in a forceful, do as I say kind of commitment, but in a “here, let me help you” or “could you please help me?” kind of a way.
Intention is not merely a mission statement to be placed on a plaque and hung on a wall, the WESOS intention is something that lives and breaths within the heart of every WESOS sister around the globe, because once you realize you “get it” there is no way “It” can not permeate every aspect of your being.
Women supporting women is not just a great message and idea for women entrepreneurs, but an essential goal for the future of all women in society. When everyone realizes the purpose of our lives (or the Intention of our souls) is to help one and other, the world will hold a brighter future for all coming generations.
Of course, action must be attached to every Intention. We have to live our Intention for it to direct our future. Life happens, and problems arise, but with the Intention of the course you want to take, and the attitude you have on the journey makes all the difference in the outcome. One of my favorite quotes comes from the movie, “Forrest Gump” released in 1994 (if you haven’t seen it, I highly suggest it). Forrest Gump says:
“I don’t know if we each have a destiny,
or if we’re all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I,
I think maybe it’s both.
Maybe both is happening at the same time”.
