3 Reasons Why Your Business Growth Has Plateaued. . . and How to Fix It

Get your business back on track!

As business owners, we all face times when our business stops growing and our sales stall. It can be very frustrating to watch the growth of your business plateau, especially if it had been growing quickly. Where did you go wrong? What happened to that huge market you were so sure was out there?

If your business growth plateaued because of something you did (or didn’t do) or because of something entirely outside of your control, the good news is there are things you can do to get your business back on track. Let’s look at some of the most common reasons why businesses see their growth plateau and what you can do to fix (or prevent) it.

You’re Not Standing Out from the Competition

Regardless of what you’re selling, chances are good there’s someone else out there selling the same thing, or something close to it. The questions you should answer are: Why should someone buy from you over someone else and what do you provide that no one else can?

You Don’t Understand Your “Why”

Why did you choose this career? Out of all the things you could be doing, why are you doing this?

It could be anything from the fact that you love what you do to the simple fact that you’re good at it and it pays the bills. There is no wrong answer, but it is important for you to understand what motivates you so you can draw on that when times get tough.

Going back to the previous section on standing out from the competition, knowing your Why can help you with that as well. If you have not already done so, you should write down a list of 3-5 core values that define your business and set it apart from the competition, and your Why is a great place to start.

You’re Focusing on the Wrong Thing

One mistake I see a lot of people making when it comes to sales is they focus on one aspect of the sales cycle (usually the part where a prospect turns into a client). But if you’re not paying attention in the early stages of the sales cycle, you’ll never make it to the sale itself because you weren’t listening when the prospect told you what they want (or what they don’t want).

Rather than thinking about the sales process as something you have to win, think of it as a conversation about what they need, whether and how you can provide it to them, and what you need in order to make it happen.
